Introduction

  Arctic trip!

West Ireland - east Iceland - into the polar ice pack a few days north of Iceland, where the whalers of the 16th to 19th centuries hunted for months - to East Greenland as the ice permits - to west Iceland - back home. Trip is flexible, adaptable to possible Covid quarantine requirements, unpredictable ice conditions and the quality of the crew.

The Covid pandemic put paid to my earlier plans. With borders reopening I quickly put together a new crew.

Myself: skipper & owner of Teddy. American, living in Ireland, 62. Doctor specializing in natural medicine, formerly a carpenter. Lifelong sailing & forager. 20K NM bluewater cruising in the northeast Atlantic & adjacent Arctic. This to be my third trip to Greenland.

Aengus Donovan: Irish, 29. Works tall ships out of Scotland as deckhand or mate. Comfortable handling small boats (up to 40'). Solid windsurfer and kayaker. Bringing a sextant to teach himself how to use it.

Art Nistelrooy: Dutch, 24. Studying finances. Comfortable with small boats. Keen to sail the world.

Roberto Conechi: Italian, 33. Architect working in the Netherlands. Comfortable handling small boats. Sailing grounds Italy and the northeast Mediterranean. Bringing fine Italian wine for the benefit of mankind.

We will put photos on this blog as we go along.

We leave this weekend. Art and Roberto need to fly out of Iceland on the 6th September. Aengus & I will return home by mid September.

I will post a link to a tracker so that our progress can be followed. Useful as proof of life.
